The passing of time is not experienced at a constant speed. It speeds up, slows down, stretches and shrinks, in accordance with our changing moods. In this exhibition, the artist looks at time and its altered perceptions. Photography is, in other words, a moment that is chosen then frozen. For a photographer, ‘time’ is a film, comprised of such separate moments. It does not flow, but is a fragmented sequence.

This exhibition features a selection of films that the artist has created over the years, featuring new works as well as pieces that were exhibited in Paris Photo 2008. For the artist, this will be his first installation using projectors and TV monitors. It will be an exhibition that will push his boundaries. The exhibition will offer the opportunity to explore the delicate and sensual photographic vision of Takano, how he perceives time and expresses it in his work.

(C)Narahashi, Asako

Kurenboh will hold Asako Narahashi’s exhibition titled another side. In this exhibition, Narahashi has captured images that commonly existed in her early monochromatic photos all the way up to her most recent photos. Out of those works, she selected and reconstructed the condensed images that underlie her works by reprinting them on large, transparent sheets of film, while also showing them independently regardless of their colors or the different series they were from. In this first installation of hers, she has also fully encompassed her ideas of getting closer to the opposite side, as well as incorporating dual elements such as this world and the world beyond, front and back, and opposition and harmony.

‘Dichotomous logic’ occurs naturally in this world in which we live. But creating a harmonious circle formed with the x axis and the y axis is extremely difficult to reach. Despite this, I never cease to wish that in this world of flux in which there is an endless circle of birth, death, and rebirth, the wanderers that we are (who are seekers after truth) can possess the perspective to transcend this world and reach the Pure Land through the guidance of a ‘perpetual light.’ That is why I aspire to believe in that light by standing at the marginal boundary between this world and the world beyond. / Kurenboh

Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan will present the exciting and highly individualistic work of a new generation of Japanese artists who have come of age following the Asian economic crash of 1990. For the last several years, China has been the focus of attention for contemporary Asian art, while the remarkable and distinctive younger generation of Japanese artists who are working today has been largely ignored. This ICP exhibition will be the first major U.S. presentation of contemporary photo-based artwork from Japan in over ten years. Heavy Light will present the work of fourteen artists and will fill most of the ICP gallery space. The exhibition will include both photographs and video, many of which are large and dramatic pieces. Curated by ICP curator Christopher Phillips and Noriko Fuku of the University of Art and Design in Kyoto, Heavy Light will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue and a range of public programs.

SUZUKI, Ryoko group exhibition
Another Voice ----WE

During : 20, April.2008〜3,May.2008
Place :SHANGHAI ART MUSEUM

Theme Statement:
Art by women artists is a branch of rising academic interest in Chinese contemporary art, and adds variety to social and cultural awareness. It features women’s thinking about social realities after China’s Economic Reformation and their specific standpoints, as conveyed by their practice. That is how the title of this exhibition is derived. The participating artists, from different social backgrounds, will contribute their independent thinking on the various issues which confront humanity, and questioning of the conventional views about gender. With their feminine sensitivity and experiences, they will reveal the differences in gender cultures, and offer us an alternative awareness of our social realities.

Besides the emphasis on gender differences as manifested in the artists and their work, this exhibition shall explore the relation between gender awareness and sociology. In face of an age of multiplicity and complexity, the artists will, starting from their personal experiences, discuss the present gender relation in social structure and put forward challenging questions in their express ion of their reasonable expectation of gender power relationship.

The women artists shall pursue the value and way of life with their own vocabulary, which involves their criticism of the existing gender relations and reflections on themselves. In the social structure which features multiplicity, it is of great relevance to listen to the voice of women and to examine and reevaluate this value system which is gaining ground. This exhibition is expected to enable China to keep abreast of the present current of the world.
